There had been several plans to build at tramway before The Great Patriotic War. Construction was started in 1946 and the first tram route opened in 1947 using second hand 4 wheel cars from Leningrad.
In 1952 the first Russian standard 4 wheel metal bodied KTM 1 cars and trailers were delivered. In 1968 the first Tatra T3s arrived. The undertaking now has 2,600 employees and operates 10 services.
